Learn Japanese and Prepare for Language Exams
Learning Japanese can help you communicate in everyday situations, understand Japanese culture, and work toward study or employment goals in Japan. Students usually begin with hiragana and katakana, then develop their vocabulary, grammar, kanji, reading, and listening skills.
If you want to measure your progress, you can prepare for three Japanese language exams: the JLPT, Japanese Language NAT-TEST, and JFT-Basic. Each serves a different purpose, so the right choice depends on where you plan to use your results.
Japanese Language Exams You Can Prepare For
JLPT (Japanese-Language Proficiency Test): The JLPT has five levels, from N5 for beginners to N1 for advanced learners. It assesses language knowledge, reading, and listening. You can choose the level that matches your ability, and there is no age restriction. JLPT results can serve as proof of Japanese proficiency for schools and employers, though each institution sets its own requirements.
Japanese Language NAT-TEST: The NAT-TEST also has five levels, 5Q through 1Q, which broadly correspond to JLPT N5 through N1. It covers vocabulary, grammar, reading, and listening. Students can use it to assess their current level or prepare for a later JLPT attempt. Check the requirements of your intended school or organization before relying on a NAT-TEST result for an application.
JFT-Basic (Japan Foundation Test for Basic Japanese): The JFT-Basic focuses on the Japanese needed for daily life in Japan. It assesses script and vocabulary, conversation and expression, listening, and reading. Scores range from 10 to 250; a score of 200–250 is assessed as A2.2 (A2). JFT-Basic results can be used for certain residence status applications, including Specified Skilled Worker (i). Eligibility and booking rules vary by test country, so check the official registration information before applying.
Whether you are starting with basic Japanese or preparing for a specific exam, choosing your target early gives your study a clear direction. Check the exact language requirement with your school, employer, or application program before selecting an exam.
